In your opinion, do you think Americans have become better or worse people since 1790?

I have to do an ignment for school and I want the opinion of different people to help me with my speech. We're studying George Washington's letter to the Hebrew Congregations in 1790. In this letter, he brags on the Americans and is very happy with them. We're going to give a speech about whether or not the Americans have lived up to his expectations.
