Why hasn't metal music been accepted by the mainstream music scene in America?

I don't really see a reason for metal music to be widely accepted, for the simple fact that the fans we have now are a family, a very close following. Any other type of music that is out there has always been extremely over-publicized, and in turn, it lowers the quality of the music drastically. I whole-heartedly respect all genres of music, though I am, and will remain, a die-hard metalhead. I just saw Dimmu Borgir, Kataklysm, and Devil Driver in Denver, and it was amazing. Who needs a bunch more people that are just going to wear band patches on their clothing, and never even buy their CD? That is the kind of "fan" that ruins others who may expose themselves to this music. It's amazing, and if you don't like it, then more power to you. That just means that when you leave, I can blast Deicide louder without the bitching and complaining.
