My partner has a cat and I am allergic AND don't want any pets?

My partner and I have been renting an apartment for a year. We have not had any pets for two years by mutual agreement because of severe allergies (mine) and other reasons. Recently a cat she had adopted out needed to be returned. Despite using allergy meds, I am suffering enormously and because of the size of the apt am relegated to the bedroom and bathroom as the only two rooms where this very hairy cat is not allowed. The cat climbs on furniture and behaves as a typical cat would, of course. I am middle aged, have raised kids and by choice, do not have pets. Finding a home for an "old" cat is not easy either. My partner loves her cat and is glad to have her back. She also loves me and hates to see me suffering, but at the same time is not attentive to vacuuming up hair etc. In either case, I do not want a cat and am resentful of not being able to access the living room and computer room because of all of the hair on everything. I hate going home now. Any suggestions out there?
