Is the MTV show, Laguna Beach, a REAL reality show?

Is it all staged for our entertainment or are those kids actually how they act in the show. Honestly I dont think any kids really act like that so i was kind of uming it was a faux reality show in which everything was acted out. Are the kids actual people that were chosen from the public or are they actors for the show?
