Was Ip Man really a great fighter?

I do wing chun and watched the movies ip man 1 and 2. I know yip man didn't fight a Japanese general or boxer. Ever since these movies I see a lit of people saying how ip man could beat anyone. Did the real yip man ever actually fight? I know he taught Bruce lee so he must be pretty good but have these movies set a false image of ip man?
